The aim and purpose of the Mothers’ Union is to demonstrate the Christian faith in action by the transformation of communities worldwide through the nurture of family in its many forms.

Mothers’ Union members do this by working towards five objectives:

- Supporting and promoting marriage

- Encouraging parents in their role to develop the faith of their children

- Maintaining a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service

- Promoting conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children

- Helping those whose family life has met with adversity

Membership is open to anyone, male or female, single or married, providing you have been baptised as a Christian and support our aims and objectives. As everyone has different demands on their time, Mothers' Union offers several types of membership to enable you to engage with the work of the MU in a way that suits you best. Annual membership subscriptions apply.

Branch Membership

You can become a Branch member and get involved with the MU at a local level. Branches are attached to Parishes and hold regular meetings to pray and support members, learn more about the work of the organisation and get involved with projects and campaigns. There is often a guest speaker. Branch members work together to further the aim, purpose and objectives of the MU and share fellowship by supporting events and activities throughout the Diocese. Members will also receive Newsletters and Families Worldwide. To find details of your local Branch, including when they meet and who to contact for more information, please see the Branch Information page.

Diocesan Membership

Those who wish to support the work of the Mothers' Union but who are unable to attend Branch meetings (perhaps because of other commitments, the lack of a convenient Branch or for personal reasons) may choose to become Diocesan Members. Diocesan Members can contribute ideas, run activities, take official roles and are welcome to join in any MU activities. Diocesan Members receive a Newsletter, Families Worldwide and regular updates about events and activities.

Mary Gray is the Diocesan Members' Coordinator in Ripon and Leeds. Mary has been a member of St James' Wetherby Branch since April 1974 where she has served as both Secretary and Branch Leader.

More information about Diocesan Membership within Ripon and Leeds, including contact details for Mary, can be found here.

Indoor Membership

Those who are prevented from participating in Branch activities due to age or infirmity but who are committed to supporting the work of the Mothers' Union can maintain their membership as an Indoor Member. Members continue to pay their subscription to their local Branch which is responsible for maintaining the link with Indoor Members and provides them with publications and newsletters. For more information, contact your local Branch (see Branch Information page).

Central Membership

This is for those who support what the Mothers' Union stands for and wish to be kept up-to-date with MU work and campaigns, but do not want to be involved locally. The higher membership fee includes a subscription to the Families First magazine, copies of Families Worldwide and regular campaign updates. More information can be found here.
